PEPIC-N

Preparing for Expanded PrEP access in Communities in Nigeria

Sole Objective

To push for access of persons at substantial risks for HIV infection to have access to comprehensive HIV prevention including PrEP.

Campaign Method

NHVMAS shall be developing a comprehensive protocol for three years (2016/2017 – 2018/2019) project which shall be designed as an implementation research project owned and implemented by the community.

PEPIC-N: a sub-campaign to the LeNNiB campaign is the ‘Preparing for Expanded PrEP access in Communities in Nigeria’.

In view of the emerging development in the field of biomedical HIV prevention science including the ongoing Nigeria PrEP demonstration study, it has become imperative for NHVMAS to position itself as an advocacy organization to drive community access to proven HIV tools.

We have therefore envisioned a new project titled: Preparing for Expanded PrEP access in Communities in Nigeria (PEPIC-N). The sole objective of PEPEIC-N is to push for access of persons at substantial risks for HIV infection to have access to comprehensive HIV prevention including PrEP.

Conduct extensive public education on the place and importance of pre-exposure prophylaxis as a tool to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Hopefully, the public education and enlightenment will create grassroot movements and grassroot demand for PrEP from appropriate stakeholders. The objective of this is to ‘normalise’ for the Nigeria community.

To develop a training curriculum to help researchers working in the field of HIV to learn about the needs of persons at substantial risk for HIV, identify the research priority needs of the community, and support researchers to conduct implementation research for the community with the objective of generating evidence for policy and programs.

To create a Community Advisory Board to support for researchers develop a community oriented research that is driven by the need of the community, with support of the community in its design and implementation, and generate evidence that can immediately be utilized by the community to address its own needs.

To develop tools and support peer educators working with populations at substantial risk for HIV infection to create awareness and educate them about PrEP as an important HIV prevention tool.

NHVMAS shall be developing a comprehensive protocol for this three years project which shall be designed as an implementation research project owned and implemented by the community.
